50 Newton Fellows will be appointed each year. The aim is to maintain at least 100 active Fellowships per year from the second year of the scheme onwards.

How much is a Newton International Fellowship worth?

The Fellowship will consist of £24,000 subsistence and up to £8,000 research expenses per annum, and up to £2,000 relocation expenses for the duration of the award. In addition, host universities will receive 50% of the annual value of the Fellowship as a contribution towards their overhead costs. As part of the package, Newton Fellows who remain in research may be granted 10 year follow-up funding worth £6,000 per annum.

How do I apply?

You should apply jointly with your proposed Sponsor using the online e-GAP2 system. See the How to apply page.

The Fellowships are available for researchers in all disciplines in the natural and social sciences, engineering and the humanities. If you have any concerns about your eligibility, please contact us at info@newtonfellowships.org.

Where can I hold the Fellowship?

The Fellowships are tenable at any UK university or public research institute. You need to agree a research project with your proposed host.

How long do the Fellowships last?

The Fellowships run for two years in the UK. As part of the package, Newton Fellows who remain in research may be granted a 10 year follow-up funding package worth £6,000 per annum.

What criteria are used to assess applications?

The primary considerations are listed below. Successful applications should be strong in all respects:

  • The academic research background of the Fellowship Applicant
  • The quality of the proposed research project
  • The expected benefits for the career development of the Applicant
  • The track record of the UK Sponsor and host organisation in the area of proposed research
  • The suitability of the UK Sponsor and host organisation for the Applicant’s research project
  • The additional benefits for the UK Sponsor and host organisation.

What is the role of the UK Sponsor?

The UK Sponsor will act as your main research contact in the UK, providing research support and guidance, access to necessary facilities, and assistance with practical and research arrangements. The Sponsor must hold a permanent or fixed-term contract (lasting for the duration of the Fellowship) in a publicly-funded research organisation in the UK. The Sponsor will liaise with the host organisation to facilitate the Fellowship.

What information is required from the UK Sponsor?

The UK Sponsor is required to provide contact details and information on their research career, and explain the reason he/she is prepared to collaborate with you on the Newton International Fellowship.

What information is required from the UK host organisation?

The UK host organisation is required to indicate that it is willing to provide a base for the Fellowship by authorising and submitting the application through e-GAP2. This authorisation is not provided by the UK Sponsor; each organisation has an individual responsible for the grant authorisation process. Your application will not be considered unless it has received UK host organisational approval.
